You may be curious to know how these rapids form in the first place, so here are 3 fascinating things to know about the white water rapids on the Pigeon River:

1. How Rapids Form on the Pigeon River

There are several factors that cause white water rapids to form on the river, including water flow, gradient, constriction, and obstacles. Water is obviously essential for rapids to form and you’ll notice rapids in any kind of flowing water, even in the smallest creeks of the Smokies! The next two factors, gradient, and constriction, both aid in speeding up the water as it makes its way down the river. Gradient refers to the slope of the ground that the water is flowing over, while constriction refers to when the river is forced to a smaller or more narrow channel. Finally, large boulders and other obstacles create the most prominent features in rapids such as big waves!

2. Where Rapids Form on the Pigeon River

raftingAnother fascinating thing to know about the white water rapids on the Pigeon River is where they form on the river! You’ll typically find rapids in the steeper sections of the river because the increased gradient causes the water to flow faster. The type of rock that makes up the riverbed also plays a significant role in the formation of rapids. When the river reaches a layer of rock that is more difficult to erode, it forms narrow channels and stretches of exciting white water rapids!

3. Classification of White Water Rapids

If you are new to white water rafting, you may be wondering what the classifications of the rapids are all about! Rapids are measured on a scale from Class I to Class VI, with Class I being the easiest to navigate since there is little to no white water. Class II rapids are still considered fairly easy since these are straightforward wide rapids that are simple to maneuver around. Class III rapids feature strong currents and moderately sized waves, while Class IV consists of powerful and turbulent waves. Class V and VI are considered expert rapids that are challenging for even the most experienced rafters!
