With 15 years of professional guiding experience already under his belt, he had a clear vision of what a premier rafting company should look like. He rolled up his sleeves, hand-built a modest riverside cabin to serve as his home and his base, handled every booking, and guided every single excursion himself.
Today, that solo venture has evolved into Smoky Mountain Outdoors (SMO Rafting), the largest and most trusted outfitter on the Pigeon River, with double the guest capacity of other local companies.
Daniel’s wife, Denise, directs our Reservation Center, while their children guide trips down the river alongside a dedicated team of nearly 100 professionals. Daniel also serves as the President of the Pigeon River Outfitters' Association, spearheading local and national conservation initiatives to protect the very waters that shaped his life's work.
In September 2024, Hurricane Helene tore through the Smoky Mountains with devastating force, completely wiping out our entire riverside outpost.
Faced with total destruction, our family chose to look forward. Rather than letting the storm define our ending, we used it as an opportunity to reinforce our commitment to this community.
Within a single year, we completely rebuilt our operations from scratch.
We entered the season with a brand-new, modern outpost, top-tier rafting gear, and the exact same passion that started it all.
