Whitewater Rafting Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Will I have a guide?
A: Yes, all of our trips are fully guided. The only exception are the funyaks on the lower section. When you request a funyak on the Lower Pigeon you will be on a guided trip, in a boat of your own but never far from a professional guide.

Q: How far are you from Gatlinburg and other Attractions in Gatlinburg TN?
A: Our Pigeon River Outpost is located about 45 minutes north of Gatlinburg. It is the closest whitewater rafting to the Smoky Mountain area. Click Here for a map of the area and directions to our outpost.

Q: Do I have to know how to swim?
A: No, every guest is issued a type 5, Coast Guard approved personal flotation device. The "PFD" is designed to give you all of the floatation needed on the river.

Q: Is there a place to stay nearby?
A: There are thousands of lodging options located nearby. A few we recommend can be found on our Smoky Mountain area information page.

Q: Can I go if I am a bit overweight?
A: There are no upper limit weight requirements. Our "PFD's" can accommodate a chest girth of 54". You can try on one of our PFD's at our Gatlinburg Office prior to making a reservation.

Q: Is there a minimum age?
A: The minimum age/weight for the Upper Pigeon trip is 8 years old or 70 pounds. Children must be at least 3 years old to go on the Lower Pigeon trip.

Q: Do you have a group rate?
A: Yes, groups of 10 or more receive a discounted per person rate AND for every 11th person in your party, one goes free. For school, church, and girl/boy scout troops, click on our Group Specials page for additional information.

Q: What are the times of your trips?
A: The Pigeon River is not a free flowing river. About ten miles upstream from our launch area there is a dam that regulates the amount of water flowing down the river. From Memorial Day to Labor Day the flow is consistent and we can schedule accordingly. During the summer months we raft Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday starting 11AM and trips depart every half hour until 5PM. The spring and fall trip availability will be based on local rainfall. Please call for up to date information during this time period.

Q: If I am pregnant can I go?
A: We do not recommend rafting if you are more than two months pregnant.

Q: What do I wear?
A:

Summer –

  • Shorts
  • Bathing suit or t-shirt
  • Secure fitting shoes. No flip-flops or bare feet allowed.
  • Bring dry clothes/shoes & a towel for after the trip

Spring and Fall - avoid cotton clothing, it really absorbs water and will make you cold.

  • Wool
  • Synthetic fabrics like fleece and polypropylene - no jeans.
  • We provide nylon jackets and pants to wear over your clothing at no extra charge.
  • Bring dry clothes/shoes & a towel for after the trip
Q: Can I bring a camera on the trip?
A: We recommend that you lock all personal items in your vehicle. Anything that you bring on the river will get wet and could possibly get lost during the trip. We try to take several pictures of every boat during the trip, and these images that are available for purchase at the outpost after your trip.

Q: Do you raft in the rain?
A: We raft rain or shine. Rafting is one of the best rainy day activities because getting wet is part of the fun! We may delay the trip for a few minutes to allow a strong storm to pass.
